To this very day I can still remember how dark it was that night as I walked alone down a country road in the middle of nowhere. I was happily drunk. I remember flapping my hand in front of my face and seeing only a trace of outline, a hint of movement. There was no moon that night and the stars were hidden behind the clouds. Oh it was dark. So dark I could barely see the surface of the road I walked upon. Even after all these years I remember it well.
It was a small country road wide enough for two-way traffic, yet not important enough to have fancy things like stripes. Not that it mattered to me anyway… it was the middle of the night, no traffic could be found for miles in any direction. To each side of the road lie nothing but cornfields. Since it was fall, none of the corn stood in the fields, only row after row of dirt clumps and the occasional rock. There was not a tree in sight.
How could I know all of this if it was so dark I could barely see my hand? Well, it all started quite a few hours earlier when there was still light in the sky. I had been riding in a car with the psychotic gal I was dating and a bunch of our friends. We were following another car, and yet another was following us, all loaded with people. Whether it was the loud music in the car, the beer drinking, or my clingy girlfriend that kept me from paying attention to where we were going I couldn't rightfully tell you. Probably all of the above. All I knew is we had been driving around the country for quite some time before all three cars pulled into a very small roadside parking lot made of gravel. The lot looked like it probably could have fit five or so cars in a single row. Why there was a small parking area out there in the middle of nowhere is still a mystery to me. Anyway, it was still light when we parked the cars.
As it happened, we had PLENTY of beer to drink. All three trunks had coolers packed with ice and beer. The car I was riding in had all of the windows rolled down and the passenger door left open so that we could hear the tape player better. The lot overlooked a barren cornfield that sloped gently down and away from us. I actually think the view would have been pretty romantic if we could see the sun setting, but the sky was solid gray with clouds so it just looked bland.
