Chapter six: The stories end
“…and that is the story of how your grandmother and I met. When the two of us awoke later that afternoon, we were convinced that the power of love is what knocked us senseless. It was not until long after that I learned otherwise.” With a look of deep concentration the oldest one asked “so what was the greatest gift then? True love?”
“Weren’t you paying attention? The greatest gift was the SLINGSHOT.” Grandpa said. At this the next oldest piped in “what do you mean the SLINGSHOT??”
“I told you that I did not find out the truth of that day until much later. One day I ran into the old crow and he asked how I was doing with my lady. I had not seen him since meeting her so I told him about that day. When he heard about 'the kiss' and the 'power' we felt that old crow laughed so hard he almost fell out of his tree!”
“He told me about the slingshot you see. The reason that the slingshot is the greatest gift of all is this…if your grandmother had known the whole time that it was a ROCK that knocked her senseless and NOT the power of love, who knows what she would have done? Probably flown the other direction as fast as her wings would have carried her. Had that rotten kid not hit us with that confounded slingshot, who knows if your grandmother would have ever felt the way she does about me? This is why I never told her the story of the greatest gift. I mean, why mess with a good thing?” He finished with a broad smile and a sly wink. He did not see the knowing smile on grandma’s face behind him. “I wonder what he would think if he knew that I have known all about that rock the whole time” she thought to herself.
“Well children, that is all for tonight. I am tired now and it is getting late for you as well.” He started to get up but before he did he was interrupted by the youngest. “Grandpa, you never did tell us what the old crow meant by parts!” As he turned to grandma with a hint of red on his face she finally broke her silence with a good hearty laugh.
