Chapter five: The greatest gift of all
“No, not that one…it’s not round enough” Timmy said.
Rolling his eyes, Roger asks “What’s the difference anyway?”.
“If you want it to work right we need the right kind” Timmy patiently explains.
“Kinda like skippers?”
“Yep, only the right ones will work. Otherwise it’s no fun”.
“Let’s just try it anyway. I’m tired of waiting”.
Timmy could see his friend was losing patience but assures him that it will be worth the wait.
“How bout this one?” Roger asks excitedly.
“That one is perfect, put it on the pile” Timmy tells him.
Meanwhile…
…To our larks the world seems to have been put on pause. The two of them just sat there on that low treetop talking. They laugh at each other’s little jokes, smile at each other’s stories about themselves, and simply feel the warmth of the sun spread through them.
The sounds of the world around them had disappeared. No longer could they hear the distant sound of cars or the sound of children playing nearby. To them it seems as if the sun was shining for them alone.
“You know, before today I never really felt like I would find that one and only bird for me. Like I would forever fly with none by my side, never feel the joy of sharing my ups and downs, or the little victories of life. When I heard your song and saw your face….all of that changed.” The lark looks at her with eyes full of stars.
“And I thought that none could fill the emptiness inside of me. I felt that none could stop the pain I have felt. In your eyes I see that you can do all of that and more. If I were to die right now I could say I died content”.
The two larks began drifting closer and closer to each other. The world around them seems almost to vanish. As their beaks meet for a passionate kiss both feel an explosion of white light... followed by the sensation of falling….falling…. falling….
“Woo hooo! I can’t believe it! You got both of those birds with ONE SHOT!!!” Timmy was almost hyperventilating with excitement. “I have never ever in my whole life saw something THAT COOL!” He was jumping up and down and pointing at the spot where the two larks were sitting only moments before.
“Nobody is ever going to believe us Timmy….I can’t believe it myself! This slingshot is the greatest gift of all time!” Roger puts the slingshot in his back pocket. “after a shot like that I think it would be best to just enjoy the moment….wanna go to the pond and skip turtles?”
“Sure, let’s go!” Timmy says. As the sound of the boys laughter begins to fade away the old crow just shakes his head from a nearby perch. “Boy, I sure didn’t see THAT coming” he says to himself.
