Chapter four: The Birdsong
While the boys rejoiced over the wonderful gift our friend the lark was already beginning to forget the words of the old crow. His thoughts began to focus instead on getting a bite to eat. “Hmmm, where should I go out to eat today?” thought the lark. Ah yes…the pond!” and with that he turns wing and begins heading for the nearby pond.
As he approaches the pond he hears the loveliest sound he has ever heard. It was a song, the most hauntingly beautiful song he has ever encountered. Surely a new type of bird was visiting the area because he knows that none of the birds around here could sing like that.
Drawn to the sound he finds the heart broken lady lark in a low treetop singing her sad song. Without realizing it he finds himself landing on the branch next to her. His landing startles the lady out of her song and she looks a bit embarrassed. “No, no, please don’t stop” he quickly pleads.
“I…er…. who are you? Why are you bothering me anyway?” the lady snaps defensively. Seeing the hurt look on his face she quickly apologizes “I am sorry. You just startled me is all. I should be going anyway”. At this the young lark says “Please don’t go, maybe we could get to know each other”. Then their eyes meet and it seemed the rest of the world is forgotten by both of them. “I suppose I could do that” she quietly replies.
From a treetop nearby the old crow is watching the two with an amused look. “Bout time” he says to himself with a crooked grin.
